OUR STREETS! page 2 links: PAGE PAGE PAGE Protesting the Sanctions in Iraq 2001, Mixed Media on Paper, 11" x 24" 2001, Mixed Media on Paper , 11" x 24" Protesters constructed hundreds of tiny coffins to represent the young children who would die that day because of the sanctions against Iraq. Each tiny coffin had a picture of a child who had died. My friend saw a news report that day which showed the protest from a helicopter. The reporter pondered what the meaning of the coffins could be, then the news station cut back to the events inside the Staple Center. Not far from the Democratic National Convention in downtown Los Angeles is the garment district where many immigrants labor to make designer clothes in sweatshops. We met in this neighborhood to rally for immigrant rights and improved working conditions. As we marched through the streets, hundreds of heads poked through factory windows to cheer us on.
