SHIBORI STUDIO ARTIST PROFILE SHIBORI STUDIO Traditional Japanese Textiles, Fabrics & Art CAROL GUSTAVSON, BFA Profile of the Artist Shibori Events Calendar In-Stock Items (when available) ABOUT THE ARTIST: Carol Gustavson holds a B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has the rare distinction of being one of the only artists creating Traditional Japanese Shibori* , 絞り染め, in the USA. Her work has received international acclaim and is in collections worldwide. Carol creates both traditional Japanese and original contemporary designs. All work is produced by hand with natural dyes on fine fabrics using centuries old master techniques. Her work reflects more than thirty years in fiber arts including weaving, printing, painting, beading, garment design, embroidery, stump work, sculpture and traditional Hawaiian quilting. She is also a trained traditional kimono maker. Before devoting her career to shibori, Carol was a professional costume designer and wardrobe manager and her work was on permanent display at the Chicago Cultural Center. Her private studio in St. Charles has a prestigious client list including Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Janet Jackson, Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt, Walt Disney Corp., WGN-TV, CBS-TV, Princess Cruise Lines, Amoco Oil Co., American Airlines and private individuals. She is a student and performer of the renown Fujima Shunojo School of Japanese Classical Dance. Her work has been published in numerous feature articles. *Shibori is a Certified Traditional Art of Japan, rarely produced anymore. Historically reserved for only royalty and the elite, it is still highly prized and revered today with most shibori kimono being displayed in museums. As the only Traditional Japanese Shibori Kimono Artist/Designer in the U.S.A., this will be the first exhibition of its kind in the country.
