Harold Olejarz
Steps and Staircases

The more I worked on the series of wave sculptures the more I realized that I was interested in the idea of rising and falling and the series of wooden wave sculptures evolved into a series of sculptures that explored steps and staircases.

I saw stairs as a path that led you both up and down. The first step sculptures I made were similar to the piece below called Tower, very geometric, planned and orderly. The later step sculptures were more spontaneous. I built them without any drawings or plans. I simply cut hundreds of blocks of wood and glued one onto the next and so on and so on. The last piece on this page, Thunderbolt, is named after a roller coaster ride I rode on in Coney Island.
