"I am slightly distanced from the world. That is, I distance myself from it. I live in an idealized reality. It keeps me an optimist. It made me an artist. Whenever something negative happens, in my mind it isn’t that bad because I can remove myself from it by painting it. This sets the occurrence into its own reality, separate from mine. Like a window I can look into, what I see does not directly affect me; it is self-contained.

The same goes for positive experiences, in a sense. I don’t know if I am ever truly experiencing them because I am constantly viewing them through my artist’s eye, thinking about what a good painting they would make.

I think that I end up feeling both of these experiences, the good and the bad, more strongly through the act of painting them. In this way, I can respond more personally as my fingers, brushes, and pencils create the lines and shapes. I can even recreate lost experiences, or childhood nostalgia, through the painting process. The result is that I capture the experience, allowing myself to experience more and others to feel the same experience--or their own unique experiences--as they view my artwork."
