My Left Hand

Neither photographs nor computer manipulated images, this series documents performances of my hand in real time.

My hand, like an actor or dancer performing on a digital stage, may assume a static, inexpressive gesture and then move in an expressive way. The poses and the actions I take are digitized and documented. As I continue to gesticulate during the image-making process, I distort the image I am creating. Unlike computer manipulated images, which rely on software to manipulate and distort a still image, I am interacting with the image-capturing process to manipulate and distort how digital technology perceives my hand.

This series of images are realistic, distorted, expressive and often have a strong sculptural feel. Though the images may look like photographs, a momment in time captured on film or disc, they are actually many momments that are woven together, over time, line by line.
