Masks and artwork by Karen Lia Schlick

When I first started making my art, it was the writing of Carl Jung that connected me to the world of myths, dreams, and symbols. Now, almost thirty years later, I continue to be fascinated by the power of the image to reveal that world. These images can connect to hidden parts of ourselves, healing and making us whole.

"Psychological faith begins in the love of images. . .in reveries, fantasies, reflections, and imaginations. Their increasing vivification gives one an increasing conviction of having, and then of being, an interior reality of deep significance transcending one's personal life". James Hillman

My masks are connected with my inner world of personal myth and dreams; expressions of the currents and streams that flow beneath the surface of everyday life.

My current primary art form is masks, done in an airdried clay and worked with various materials. I also incorporate found materials, such as bones, broken glass, rusted metal, wood, roots, and so forth, into the pieces. I also work in other media including pencil drawing, etching, oil pastels, watercolours, acrylic and gouche.

Work has been exhibited in public galleries in Nova Scotia, and has travelled to other parts of Canada.
