Testing the Box oil on canvas 29" x 25"
Before we are born, we are locked into a private world to contemplate ourselves. Our only impression of reality is what exists within us. Suddenly bombarded with another world at birth, we have no choice but to look around us. Our impressions are not solid, however, as reality can only be interpreted according to the individual's personality and bias. As the world around us constantly lives according to its own rules, so do we, choosing when to align ourselves with reality and when to come into ourselves. Ultimately, is the reality we choose to accept that which exists outside or within ourselves?

Smells Ripe oil on canvas 14" x 10"
In this painting, I was trying to capture the smell of the nectarines. Every time I would enter the kitchen, the sweetness would waft over me. It smelled better than candy. I tried to get the color and the consistency of the paint to translate into the juiciness of the fruit.

Cultured Cat oil on canvas 14" x 10"
I was mainly playing around with the paints here, trying to infuse the glass bottle and the fur of the cat with all the colors that I saw. I used many layers to capture the essence of the colors. I also tried to infuse some humor in this one...not your typical cat painting.

Debbie oil on canvas 20" x 16"
This painting is one in a series I am currently working on, inspired by Vermeer's painting "Girl With a Pearl Earring," in which I am exploring how to capture that fleeting glance over the shoulder by a posed model.

Holding the Moon oil on canvas 24" x 20"
This painting concerns the relationship of humans and nature--particularly the way in which we try to overpower nature but the cycle is ultimately reversed in the end.

|
Holding the Moon II oil on canvas 32" x 35"
This painting expands on the theme of "Holding the Moon". In this painting, the human is more dominant, signifying the increase of our hold on nature. The fact that the person is standing within nature is important in suggesting that nature will not be ruined by humanity. Another important aspect of the painting is that the person is in a relaxed, symbiotic relationship with nature. This reflects the cycle of giving and taking that we are in with the earth, which is not necessarily negative.

Time Is Not Long I oil on canvas 21" x 25"
This painting is the first in a trilogy expressing my concern with the fleeting, transitory nature of time. The bronze hands of the clock are grasping the woman's leg, turning her into the machine. The fact that she cannot excape reinforces the fact that we, as humans, cannot hold back time.
|
|
Time Is Not Long II oil on canvas 30" x 20"
This is the second painting in the trilogy about the fleeting nature of time. In this image, a woman is holding onto the pendulum of a grandfather clock for fear that she will fall into the ocean, from whence she came.
|
|
Time Is Not Long III oil on canvas 30" x 25"
The third painting in the "Time is Not Long" trilogy combines the elements from the first two. In this painting, Mother Nature is taking over once more, wrapping her arms around, and thus suffocating, time. The first two paintings are present in the clock at the top of the hill; inside the face is the woman running from time in the first painting, and the pendulum is the same as that of the second.

Moondance oil on canvas 28" x 35"
Moondance was inspired by the book "The Red Tent." It symbolizes the mysterious way in which the moon has a unifying pull on women.

|
Words oil on canvas 26" x 22"
Here, I am exploring the emotions behind this gesture of frightened curiosity--or is that what it is? Underneath the picture, I wrote about the dangers of words, their ability to penetrate and unravel a confident person. "sticks and stones...." But words? The woman in the painting is simultaneously reacting to the pain words can cause, and their impermanence.

|
Woman on Top oil on canvas 20" x 16"
Need I say more? Well, maybe a little. The woman's hand is snaking on top of the man's, yet it is not forcefully dominating. The hands are intertwined. The fiery colors reinforce the strength of the bond. As women and men are still not truly equal in society, this painting shows that they can be equal in a relationship.
|
|
You Can't Hear Me Scream oil on canvas 20" x 16"
Here, I am contrasting the violent nature of the woman's pose with the acceptance of the violence. The colors are strong and forceful, yet the face appears dead, and the pose is frozen somewhere between submissive and tense. It explores the dynamic between the ravaging nature of emotions and the ability of the mind to suppress them.

To Sleep in the Presence of Evil oil on canvas 32" x 34"
In this painting I was interested in exploring texture and its effect on the mood of the painting. I wanted to capture the soft, warm, cuddly comfort of the snuggle with the cat, but I did not soften it too much, suggesting that the cat might spring at any given moment.
