PENRITH STAR TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2003 BY TRACY SORENSEN ARTIST’S BRUSH WITH ACCLAIM. Two lover Blue Mountains artists have been selected to exhibit at the Florence Biennale in December. They are Tibor Murany of Mount Riverview and Hilary Pollock of Springwood. Mr. Murany , whose paintings capture the light and colour of his Blue Mountains home and studio, said being invited to the Florence Biennale was like nominated for the Oscars. I would love to win a prize but it is an honor just to go there”, he said. Mr. Murany ,54, was born in Bratislava in what was then Czechoslovakia ( now Slovakia). He came to Australia in 1971 and it has been living in Mount Riverview for 20 years. He trained at the East Sydney Technical College now the National Art School in Sydney before studying at the Medici Academy in Florence and the Kunst Academy in Düsseldorf. You got there to absorb the atmosphere he said of the European Art Academies. I went because I always wanted to know what it was all about. He said his current paintings represented his observation of colour, as seen on reflective surfaces, in changing light over the course of the day. His brilliantly coloured, semi-figurative works feature familiar objects such as spoons and even stainless steel juicer. |
