WESTERN WEEKENDER 2 APRIL 12, 2002 BY AMANDA LOOYEN WALK THROUGH TIME Murany’s recent paintings have created a raw, revolutionary direction in art with his unique interpretation of his surroundings. Instead of capturing the moment as a photographic image would do, Murany introduces the concept of time. His aim is to show the colours, lights and shadows as they change during the day thus adding another dimension to his work. Murany was born in Slovakia ( former Czechoslovakia) in 1949 and now resides in the picturesque lower Blue Mountains, the inspiration for much of his work. The artist struggled to define his style for many years before a break through 2001, sitting in his Mount Riverview garden. Murany discovered that what he sought from traveling abroad in his younger years was actually in his immediate surroundings and his paintings become fluid, fresh and vibrant. Murany’s colours are based on hourly changes in his surroundings, making his paintings not of the moment, but a walk through time. The phenomenon of the lower Blue Mountains and the subtle vapour from the gum trees have the tendency to change the appearance of colors when the sun’s rays penetrate through distant smokes and fogs. Murany’s style is a combination of landscape, still life and surrealism and he captures his immediate surrounding with a strong passion. |
